Description : Up for auction are molded sculptures by Hungarian-Canadian sculptor Elek Imredy (1912-1994). The piece for sale in this lot is "Peter Pumpkin Eater's Wife" from the exhibit "Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater" This piece shows very few signs of age and wear. This piece is molded to part of the counter from the pumpkin-shaped house where the piece originally stood (not included in sale). The material used for these figures is hand painted fiberglass.
This piece is part of the "Never Never Land" collection. Never Never Land was a storybook walking trail in Tacoma's Point Defiance Park that first opened in 1964. The "wooded wonderland" attraction ultimately closed in 2001 after constant vandalism and theft proved too challenging to manage in a cost effective manner. The collection has been in storage since Never Never Land closed, and while many pieces were lost during a fire in 2011, a few figures survived. This piece and others like it are fine examples of Tacoma history and are expressions of familiar nursery rhymes from Mid-century American childhood.
