1 Lot See Description Fine Art 2017-13
This lot includes 73 one-of-a-kind historic scenic stage drops created for Masonic Scottish Rites. The Drops were deemed of significant historic importance by the Minnesota Historic Society, are all original, and were part of a collection of 99 single drops that made up 59 ritual scenes performed in the Masonic Temple in Winona, Minnesota.

The stage drops were designed and hand painted in 1909 using unique dry pigments by Sosman and Landis of Chicago, one of the premier scenic backdrop studios in the world at that time. The drops have sustained some water damage but have been brushed clean of soot and dust and have been rolled onto 35 foot long PVC piping and protectively stored by a team of expert preservationists for the last three years. Most of the backdrops are 18 feet 11 inches tall by 35 feet 4 ¼ inches wide. The lot includes backdrops, cut drops and legs (see photos). Also included in the lot will be approximately 34 original set pieces, also by Sosman and Landis, that were designed for use alongside of the drops.

Buyer will be able to examine some of the drops by appointment on site (see contact info), and purchasing in AS IS/ Where Is" condition. Buyer must remove all pieces and is responsible for all removal costs from building and must provide proof of liability insurance to cover damage or injury during removal from building. There is a stage door access at the rear of building but it is one flight off the ground.

The seller does not make any guarantees on the condition of the drops and no warranty is expressed or implied. Bidders are encouraged to inspect prior to bidding. Sold “As is/Where is”.

Questions and AnswersQuestions and Answers
Q: Beautiful stage drops. We have a couple of questions: 1. Can you provide photos of the items as they are in storage at this time? This will allow us to estimate the time and labor needed to load. 2. Is there a lift of any type available for use or rent to move materials from the stage door to the ground level? 3. Moving the steps "Hearing, Seeing, Feeling, etc" would likely be problematic. Are you aware of any local groups who would be interested in receiving a donation of any materials which we are unable to load and remove? THANK YOU! (11/21/17 10:36 AM)
A: 1. We don't have photos of current storage, but the drops are rolled and covered with canvas on pvc pipe. The rolls are approximately 2-3 diameter, 36 feet long. They are not on battens so could be unrolled and transported however the buyer sees fit. Restoration expert recommends keeping on the rolls. The weight of each roll varies. The rolls are currently in wooden crates, but the City will remove from crate and place on the main theater floor. 2. The City does not have a lift, but there is a main stage door, one flight up that has direct access to an alleyway that a commercial fork lift could use to maneuver the lowering of the drops. 3. We are not aware of any local groups that would wish for a donation. Dismantling of the larger pieces could assist in their removal. (11/21/17 3:18 PM)

Q: We understand that you will be unable to give exact dimensions and weight but could you help us create a better benchmark for transportation purposes? You previously stated that these are 2-3 diameter, 36 feet long. We assume you mean 2-3 feet in diameter? If so, is each 36 foot roll comprised of 1 /3 / 10 drops? A better question may be, how many 36 foot rolls are there? As rolled, can 2 average sized people lift a roll? Just looking to understand if we could get the drops on a moving truck if folded over...or 5 moving vans...or a semi? We will not "hold" you to any specific answer...just looking for a good "gut guess" as to our manpower needs. (11/28/17 11:39 AM)
A: Yes, 2-3 foot diameter; each roll has 2 to 4 drops. There are approximately 27 rolls. Yes, 2 people could lift, but some are over a hundred pounds. The greatest difficulty will be removal from the second floor space to the ground. There is no stairway access that can accommodate their length. Either out a window or the back stage door both with a lift will be the only way to remove them on the rolls. If drops are taken off the rolls (not recommended) they could be folded and then carried out by two people. And a large van could be used if drops are folded but restoration experts caution could create damage. If left on the rolls, a truck long enough to haul 36 to 37 feet and at least four or five feet tall. They can rest on top of each other fairly easily in the rolls. (11/28/17 1:13 PM)

Q: Are the rolls in individual crates? Do you have the dimensions and approximate weight of each crate? If the city moves from the crate to main stage floor, can we still keep the crates? (11/28/17 11:43 AM)
A: Most of the drops are still in two large wood crates, each crate had rolls stacked up to five levels high and four rows across. Some of the rolls were removed from the crates so that the drops the City is retaining could be removed. With the crates, the drops are in rolls of two to four drops each, each covered to protect them. The rolls are approximately 36 feet long and weigh at least 100 pounds each. There are approximately 27 rolls. The 2 crates would have to be dissembled to be removed for re-use. They are approximately 37 feet long and 6 feet high. The buyer keep the crates which are made from raw wood. (11/28/17 1:22 PM)
