History of Organ: It was built in 1965 by the Holtkamp Organ Company of Cleveland, Ohio as their Opus number 1793. The Holtkamp Company won an architectural award for the organ’s aesthetic properties and its innovative incorporation into an existing space. The instrument was built during the tenure of Walter Holtkamp Jr., son of the founder of the company and an American icon in the pipe organ building industry. The Holtkamp Company has always been considered one of America’s leading designers and builders of pipe organs. The organ was commissioned by the Penn State University class of 1938 during its 25th anniversary Reunion, was dedicated in 1966, and renovated in 2005.

Condition of Organ:The organ consists of 2 manuals and pedal with 1967 pipes. The action of the instrument is electro pneumatic. The Holtkamp organ was completely overhauled by the company, S.D.G. Pipe Organs, in 2005. The overhaul included cleaning of all of the pipework, re-leathering of all of the instrument’s mechanical components, installation of a 99 memory level solid state combination action and a complete rewiring of the instrument in compliance with the National Electrical Code protocol for pipe organs. This renovation substantially increased the number of manual pistons and toestuds.

The distinctive voicing of the instrument lends itself to the performance of organ music of the Baroque era, but careful registration can lend itself to the performance of more modern music as well. Not only is it a fine practice, teaching and recital instrument, but it could also lead congregational singing quite effectively. Depending on its future location, the console on its movable base is quite advantageous. This Holtkamp Organ has a present estimated value of at least $350,000. Brand new this organ would cost about $650,000.There is a video on the S.D.G. Pipe Organs website showing details about the work they have done on this organ: https://www.youtube.com/embed/j9fWfIcEHN4 (or you can find it on the SDG webpage under the link to “other works of interest”)
