VESSEL NAME: BARNEY DEVINE OPERATOR: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Sturgeon Bay Fisheries, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

Contact for inspection or additional information is the Captain, Brandon Bastar, 920-746-2881.

HISTORY: The Barney Devine was built in 1937 by Burger Boat Company, Manitowoc, WI. The boat was built for Ludlow White of Alpena, Mich., a commercial fisherman, and was originally named the Albert J. Three years later, DNR's predecessor agency, the Wisconsin Conservation Department, bought the vessel for commercial enforcement. The department renamed the vessel the RV Barney Devine after Chief Conservation Warden Barney Devine who had died in December 1940 while still in office. From 1940 through 1969, the wardens used the RV Barney Devine on Lake Michigan for commercial fish enforcement. In 1969, the vessel was transferred to the Bureau of Fisheries Management to use as a fisheries research vessel and has been in use and maintained since.

DESCRIPTION: The RV Barney Devine is a Great Lakes gill-net boat. It is steel-hulled, 50 feet long, a beam of 14.5 feet, a draft of 5.5 feet, and a displacement of 42 tons. The working deck is enclosed with 700 sq feet of internal area with access to the water by two sliding hatch doors both port and starboard and a large sliding stern door. The vessel is fully operational and has been put up for sale due to a new vessel being acquired.

Propulsion: The vessel is powered by a 250 hp Cummins Model NT-335M 6 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine connected to a Twin Disc 509 marine gear with trolling valve.

The Cummins engine does not have an hour meter. However, it had a complete overhaul by Cummins Great Lakes / Marine division in September of 1997. At that time, they estimated that there were 10,000 hours of use on the 25 year old engine (400 hours per year). The Department estimates that the boat has been used about 320 hours per year over the last 14 years, so it is likely the engine has about 4500 hours on it since the overhaul.

Other Equipment: • Onboard electrical power is provided by a diesel-powered 8.5 kW Kohler generator installed in 1995. (2860 hours) • Simrad Robertson autopilot (1999) • Simrad radar (1998) • Northstar X41 GPS (1991) • Garmin 210 GPS (1997) • Furuno depth sounder (1983) • Datamarine depth sounder (1999) • Two Icom marine radios (I10 and I06) (1993 and 1999) • Stainless Steel Kahlenberg Propeller 3 Blade right hand rotation, 42" diameter x 48" pitch balanced. 3 1/2" Prop shaft checked and keyed. (2002) • Dual fuel tanks • Racor filtration system • Shore Power / Charles charger/inverter • Crossley gill net lifter

An independent Naval Architect inspected the vessel in 1997, 2005 and 2011. The inspection reports are available for serious buyers. You may obtain the reports and arrange viewing and inspection of the vessel by contacting the captain, Brandon Bastar at 920-746-2881.
